UKRAINE

WSJ reporting that the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency is likely to visit the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine next week in order to examine the state of the plant after intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces in the vicinity.

  • WSJ: "The team from the IAEA could bring spare parts, radiation-monitoring devices and other vital materials to the plant, Europe’s largest, amid fears that fighting in the area that has damaged power lines and caused fires at the facility could also lead to a nuclear catastrophe."
  • Ukraine and Russia have accused one another of shelling the facility, which was disconnected from the national grid yesterday following fires affecting power lines. Russia have denied using the plant - which it occupies - as a 'shield' for military equipment and troops, with Ukrainian forces seeking to avoid a potential nuclear incident.
