Year to Date Algeria Gas Supplies to Europe Stay Strong

NATURAL GAS

Southern Europe natural gas imports from Algeria have remained strong so far this year through the TransMed pipeline to Italy and Medgaz pipeline to Spain according to S&P Global.

  • Imports to Italy in the year to 18 May totalled 8.36bcm compared to 8.33bcm for the period last year and compared to 5.56bcm of LNG imports and 3.45bcm from Azerbaijan. Scheduled maintenance across the TransMed pipeline is expected to limit total flows during May.
  • Spanish imports have recovered from a dip in Q1 to reach their highest level since February earlier this month. Algerian gas accounted for around 24% of Spain's gas supplies in 2022 behind 29% from US according to Enagas.
  • Algeria produces around 100bcm/year with just under half exported and the rest consumed domestically.
