Yoon Taps BoK Policymaker To Become His Aide Amid Reshuffle Of Presidential Secretaries

SOUTH KOREA

President Yoon Suk-yeol announced a sweeping reshuffle of presidential secretaries today, which is believed to be the first leg of a shake-up of his administration ahead of next year's general election. All five senior secretaries were replaced, while Yoon confirmed the creation of a new office for policy to improve coordination with the Cabinet and the ruling People Power Party (PPP).

  • Outgoing senior presidential secretary for policy planning Lee Kwan-sup has been tapped to take up the newly created position, as his former position has been abolished. The new policy office will be empowered by overseeing the offices of the senior secretary for economic affairs and senior secretary for social policy.
  • Among the nominations announced today, the decision to appoint Bank of Korea policymaker Park Chun-sup to become senior economic affairs secretary stands out. Park joined the Monetary Policy Board in April 2023 for a four-year term.
  • Recent reports suggested that Yoon was planning to announce a reshuffle of the Cabinet, possibly as soon as next week, to renew his push for key agenda items and allow some ministers to run in the 2024 parliamentary election.
