Zelensky Expected To Take Part In UN Security Council Meeting

Wires carrying comments from Albania's ambassador to the United Nations, Ferit Hoxha, stating that Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky is expected to take part in a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine when world leaders gather in New York later this month.

  • Zelensky's appearance at the Security Council meeting will likely be a highly charged affair with both China and Russia occupying permanent seats and holding veto power on the 15-member council.
  • At previous UN summits, representatives of countries aligned with Ukraine have chosen to boycott or walk out of events during Russian remarks.
  • Most recently, representatives from the United States, Britain, Albania, and Malta walked out on Russia's envoy for children's rights during a video address to the UNSC in April.
  • The United Nations General Assembly 'high-level week' will take place September 19-23 and encompass a range of topics. According to the UN, "Heads of State and Government and ministers explore solutions to the intertwined global challenges to advance peace, security, and sustainable development."
