Zelensky Speaks On NATO, Translation Of Terms Key

UKRAINE

Newsweek reporting comments from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on NATO:

  • "According to a translation of his comments in a speech, Zelensky said that Ukraine had "realized" it would not become part of the Western military alliance. "For years we've heard the opposite, open doors, However, it is not," he said Tuesday according to Ukrainian news outlet, Trukha."
  • Some outlets reporting the translation of Zelensky's comments as 'Ukraine realises it is not part of NATO.'
  • The nature of the translation is of crucial importance. Russia has demanded Ukrainian demilitarization and neutrality as preconditions for a ceasefire. As such, Zelensky saying Ukraine realises it will not join NATO, or realises it is not part of NATO presently (due to lack of NATO troops on ground) would have significantly different implications for future Russia-Ukraine talks.
  • "Kyiv needs new formats of interaction with the West and separate security guarantees"

  • Reuters reports that Zelensky has stated that NATO's Article 5 (the pact that if one nation is attacked it is an attack on all) is 'weaker than ever before'.
