UKRAINE: Zelenskyy To Meet w/Macron & EUCO Pres On Poland Visit

UKRAINE

A spox for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that the president is set to meet with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron as well as European Council President Antonio Costa during the course of the day. The three are in Poland to attend the commemoration events for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camps.

  • Earlier in January, Zelenskyy discussed with Macron the prospect of "contingents" of Western troops being deployed within Ukraine, either in a combat or peacekeeping role. As AFP reports, "Macron has floated the idea of sending Western troops to Ukraine before, including last month when he and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk discussed the possibility of stationing peacekeepers there in the event of a ceasefire." However, other Ukrainian allies have pushed back against the prospect of Western boots on the ground, citing risks of escalation.
  • Following the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, there has been significant focus on the prospect of ceasefire talks (see 'US-RUSSIA: Kremlin Waiting For White House To OK Putin-Trump Call', 1014GMT). As Reuters reports, Trump "promised during his election campaign to end the war within his first 24 hours in the White House, without saying how. Aides have since suggested that a deal could take months."
