07:00 ET 12:00 GMT: Member countries of the International Energy Agency are to hold a meeting to discuss an additional emergency oil release alongside the US announcement yesterday to release 1m b/d for six months.

  • On March 1 the IEA released 60 million barrels but it is likely that today's meeting will commit to a larger release.
  • Members in the Asia Pacific have said they would support the IEA's initiatives including South Korea and Japan who said the country will 'act appropriately on oil reserves release while closely watching global developments.'
  • Japanese industry minister Koichi Hagiuda:' It is not clear whether the release will be done by the US alone or the United States will make a proposal at the IEA meeting.'
