2022 Generic Congressional Ballot Tightening

US

The generic congressional ballot for control of the House has tightened in Democrat favour despite predictions of heavy Democrat losses in November's midterms.

  • The generic congressional ballot is considered a bellwether of party support and presidential popularity so President Biden's recent approval rating bounce may be reflected in the congressional ballot in the coming weeks.
  • The Democrats may also perform more strongly than expected due to the high number of Democrat favoured maps from the 2021 redistricting cycle. The GOP went into redistricting with control over more districts but Democrats have gained more from the process.
  • Redistricting has created 11 additional Democratic-leaning seats , six fewer Republican-leaning seats and six fewer highly competitive seats.
  • According to FiveThirtyEight: 'This is due to aggressive map-drawing by Democrats in states such as New York as well as court decisions overturning Republican gerrymanders in Ohio and North Carolina.'
