EQUITIES: A shaky start for US markets, with a more stable European morning
giving way to equity sales in early NY hours. Cash markets are in the red, but
futures remain close to the better levels of the day. Near-term target at
3096.75 as the overnight high, but there's still a way to go before Friday's
highs are in contention.
- Despite weaker markets overall, the sector breakdown is mixed, with healthcare
the poorest performing alongside real estate. Defensive utilities names are at
the top of the board in early trade.
- Some retail brands are faring well, with Gap, L Brands and Chipotle up
strongly, whereas travel remains heavy - Norwegian Cruiselines and American
Airlines are at the bottom end of the S&P pile.
- VIX has been supported from the off, index holding at the Friday highs, but
still shy of last week's best levels.
