Al Araby: Hamas Source Claims More Hostages Remain In Gaza

ISRAEL

The London-based, Qatari-linked Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reporting that according to a senior source within Hamas, more than 20 hostages are still being held in the Gaza strip. This seeks to push back against claims that Hamas proposed the release of fewer than 20 hostages in the latest round of talks in Cairo, compared to the 40 originally outlined. The source claims that "It is not possible, of course, to accurately determine the number of living prisoners, but what is certain is that it is more than the numbers being circulated in the Hebrew media."

  • Regarding the situation in ceasefire talks, the article states "The source denied that [Hamas] was under pressure from the Egyptian and Qatari mediators, stressing that “the positions of Cairo and Doha were understanding of the resistance’s demands and conditions"."
  • The UK's Daily Mail reported on 21 April that all but 40 of the 129 hostages not sent back to Israel were dead, claiming the info came from within the Israeli intelligence agency Shin Bet. The agency has since refutedthe article, claiming that the numbers do not correlate with its own intel.
  • There appears to be little prospect of any major progress in ceasefire talks in the short term. Qatar remains in a position of 're-evaluating' its mediator's role, and there is some expectation that the Netanyahu gov't will launch a military operation in the city of Rafah in the coming weeks, limiting the chances of reaching a peace agreement.
