Alexandroupolis FSRU to Start Oct: Bulgarian Energy Minister

LNG

Greece’s new 5.5 bcm/y FSRU import facility at Alexandroupolis is set to start up in October, according to Platts citing Bulgaria’s Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov.

  • "After the technical defect connecting the LNG regasification platform to Alexandroupolis has been fixed, the terminal will be put into operation on Oct. 1. All licensing procedures have already been completed," Malinov said, cited by Platts.
  • Malinov said that the facility was now more important given the likelihood that Ukraine will not renew its transit deal with Gazprom after the Dec. 31 expiry, suspending Russian pipeline imports via that route.
  • Countries in southern Europe were once dependent on Russian pipeline gas, but increasingly see LNG as a way of diversifying supply since the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • Surplus LNG import capacity in Greece could be used for onward gas flows to Bulgaria, Italy, and the Balkans.
