Analyst's Views On Castillo Confirmation

PERU
  • Scotiabank describe the next three of four weeks as crucial for the outlook of Peru's economy and social-political environment. Over this period, the cabinet should be named, but also whether Julio Velarde will remain as BCRP governor.
  • Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue policy group has said "the biggest risk is not the installation of a communist dictatorship but just complete disorder and chaos", describing the ground as "fertile for possible violence".
  • Cynthia McClintock, a Peru expert at George Washington University, described the president elect as "quite isolated". She notes that his interventionist policies will face strong opposition from the business community and Castillo faces a congress that can easily impeach presidents. Additionally, potential obstacles from the military cannot be ruled out.
  • Steven Levitsky, a political scientist at Harvard University who closely tracks Peru commented "it is pretty likely we'll see some sort of institutional crisis". (DJ)
