ANC SecGen Blasts Coalitions, Says President Will Empower Electricity Min

SOUTH AFRICA
  • African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said that South Africa's economic problems were underpinned by "300 years of apartheid" and argued that "coalitions have not worked for this country". He also insisted that an international climate finance pact is responsible for the ongoing power cuts. The official was speaking in a debate of South African party leaders organised by The European House - Ambrosetti ahead of next year's general elections.
  • Separately, Mbalula indicated that President Cyril Ramaphosa is looking to give more powers to Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa to facilitate efforts to end the national power crisis. Mbalula suggested that the proposal has the backing of the ruling party, as it could help accelerate the implementation of the Energy Action Plan before the upcoming elections.
  • Deputy President Paul Mashatile urged parties to make submissions on a framework to govern coalitions ahead of the elections. He said that parties have had three months to make their submissions, but few have done so.
  • ActionSA will ask President Ramaphosa to launch a probe into three Cabinet ministers allegedly involved in a ZAR5bn tender bribe in the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).
