Anies Team Claims 'Structured, Systematic, Massive' Vote Violations
Wires reporting comments from the team of presidential candidate Anies Baswedan claiming that "We found many violations on election day, including vote tampering, disenfranchisement". Team claims that the alleged violations are found to be "structured, systematic, and massive". There is a period of 35 days after the election before the publication of final results in which objections and appeals can be raised.
- Anies currently sits in a distant second place behind Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, who has become the presumptive first round winner according to 'quick counts'. Prabowo launched - unsuccessful - claims against the vote count in both of his previous presidential runs in 2014 and 2019.
- Latest quick counts, Prabowo support: Litbang Kompas 58.73% based on 77.7% of the votes counted, LSI 57.19% based on 69.4% votes counted. Indikator 57.93% based on 74.67% votes counted, CSIS 58.23% with 82.5% of votes counted.
- Bloomberg reportsthat in the simultaneous legislative election, the big-tent centre-left Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) leading in early counts. The PDI-P is the party of incumbent President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo, who has not backed Ganjar Pranowo - the party's official candidate - but instead been seen to offer tacit backing to Prabowo who has Jokowi's son, Gibran Rakabuming as his VP running mate.
- Should parties in Prabowo's Indonesia Advanced alliance (Gerindra, Golkar, Demokrat, PAN) fall short of a majority, there is a strong likelihood that the PDI-P will join the governing coalition given the close policy positions between the two sides.
