Arctic Winds Support Unseasonable Heating Demand in NW Europe

POWER

Cold Arctic winds have caused an unseasonal dip in temperatures in Northwest Europe, boosting unseasonal heating demand.

  • Temperatures in London fell as low as 5C on Sunday, with Paris and Berlin dipping to around 7C according to Weather Services International.
  • “Air from the Arctic will keep things cool during the first half of the week before a switch in winds brings a different feel to end the week,” the UK Met Office said earlier this week.
  • “You’ve definitely seen more of a demand kick on a year-on-year basis, particularly when contrasted against how most major markets have moved relative to last year,” analyst at S&P, Daniel Muir, said.
  • In France, power demand is forecast to increase on Thursday to its highest level in over a month according to Bloomberg models. Entso-E data however showed demand has been broadly stable on the month.
  • Temperatures in NW Europe, however, are forecast to start rising above the seasonal normal from 16 June for several days before falling back down.
