Armenian PM Says Military Is Attempting A Coup Following Resignation Call

CEE

Armenia's PM Nikol Pashinyan has stated that the country's military is attempting a coup d'etat against his gov't following a letter from senior members of the armed forces calling for the resignation of the PM and his gov't.

  • Yesterday Pashinyan fired the deputy chief of staff of the armed forces. Came after the deputy CoS mocked Pashinyan for arguing that Russian-made Iskander missiles used during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war did not work, comments that caused a significant backlash in Moscow.
  • Pashinyan has called for his supporters to go out onto the streets and head to Republic Square in the capital, Yerevan, to oppose the coup.
  • Relations between the gov't and the military have been at rock-bottom since the end of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The army viewed the peace deal signed by Pashinyan as capitulation, given that it gave Azerbaijan significant swathes of previously Armenian-held land. The PM on the other hand is likely to have signed the deal given that prolonging the war could have seen even more territory lost given Azerbaijan's greater military capabilities.
  • In the even Pashinyan is removed from office it could see significant outbreaks of domestic violence between the PM's supporters, members of the public opposed to the peace deal, and the military. Moreover, should the military, or a politician in hock to the military, come to power it could see a renewed outbreak of violence over Nagorno Karabakh.
