Attack On Hezbollah Pagers Injures 100s As Israel Looks To Push North

In what was seemingly a coordinated attack, a number of reports have emerged from Lebanon claiming that the pagers used by Hezbollah fighters, medics, and leaders for communication simultaneously exploded, leaving hundreds injured and hospitals overwhelmed. The extraordinary attack on antiquated pieces of technology comes as the risk of a direct Israel-Hezbollah conflict remains elevated. Israel has made no comment on Hezbollah's accusations that it is behind the explosions.

  • Reuters: "A Hezbollah official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the detonation of the pagers was the "biggest security breach" the group had been subjected to in nearly a year of war with Israel...A Reuters journalist saw ambulances rushing through the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut amid widespread panic...Lebanon’s crisis operations center, [...] asked all medical workers to head to their respective hospitals to help cope with the massive numbers of wounded coming into for urgent care."
  • The action comes after Israel formally confirmedthat returning civilians to their homes in northern Israel as a goal of the war following a late-night security cabinet meeting on 16 Sep. The Israeli gov't claims that it may have to launch military action against Hezbollah in Lebanon in order to push its fighters back far enough to remove or lessen the risk to Israelis returning to the northern border regions.
