Austria Looking to End Russian Gas Contract

Austria is seeking to take radical steps to reduce it continued reliance on Russian gas imports according to Reuters, citing the country’s Energy Minister.

  • Despite government ministers repeating that Russia was not a reliable partner, state-owned oil company OMV clarified that it would continue buying gas from Gazprom under its contract lasting till 2040.
  • The share of Russian gas as a total of Austria’s supply increased in December to 98%, compared to 76% in November, although volumes did fall.
  • "We must prepare to exit OMV's long-term contracts," Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler said.
  • It was not clear what extent other members of Austria’s ruling coalition were involved in the plan, and with an election later this year, there may be further change.
