NATGAS: Azeri Gas Exports Fall 13% in Jan: Platts

NATGAS

Azerbaijan's total gas exports dropped by 13% from December, reaching 2 Bcm in January, Platts said.

  • Azerbaijan's gas production in January also fell by 13%, totalling 3.9 Bcm.
  • This decrease was due to a 12-day unplanned outage at the Shah Deniz gas field.
  • Exports to Europe fell by 17%, totalling 1 Bcm, while supplies to Turkey and Georgia amounted to 0.7 Bcm and 0.3 Bcm, respectively.
  • The outage, caused by a technical issue in the subsea condensate export line, was identified on Jan. 6 and resolved by Jan. 18.
  • Despite the recent decline, Azerbaijan's gas exports to Europe have been steadily increasing, with 12.9 Bcm supplied in 2024, up 9% from 2023.
  • Under an agreement with the EU, Azerbaijan aims to double its gas export capacity to 20 Bcm/year by 2027, though President Ilham Aliyev targets 16 Bcm.
  • Investments are needed to expand the Southern Gas Corridor, Platts added.
