Baltic Pipe Set for October Start

NATURAL GAS

The Baltic Pipe officially opened in a ceremony in Poland this week. The pipe allows Norway to send up to 10 bcm of gas annually to Poland and to transport 3 bcm of gas from Poland to Denmark.

  • The start of gas transmission is planned for 1 October 2022.
  • The pipeline represents a move away from Russian gas supplies for Poland, which were turned off in April for a refusal to pay for supplies in rubles.
  • Norway has now become the biggest supplier of gas to Europe and is key for the region’s energy security.
  • The opening of the pipeline has occurred at the same time as nearby sabotage events took place on Nord Stream pipelines which has sent fears through the EU gas markets with the potential for further sabotage attacks on other key pipelines.
