Beijing Lodges Stern Representations Over Indiana Gov's Taiwan Trip

US-CHINA

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has lodged "stern representations," a formal Chinese diplomatic complaint, with Washington over Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb's (R-IN) trip to Taiwan.

  • Holcomb's Taiwan trip is the third visit from high-ranking US politicians to the self-governing island this month. Holcomb met with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen yesterday to discuss semiconductor production and supply chains. Today, Holcomb met with representatives of Taiwan's semiconductor industry.
  • Holcomb said ahead of the meetings, "We're facing and specifically seeking to turn supply chain pains into supply chain gains. I think the way we get there faster, in a more resilient fashion, is by doing it together."
  • Holcomb's visit is likely to further inflame tensions with China and comes as today the US and the Republican of Korea begin their biggest joint military exercises in five years.
  • The exercises are a key pillar of the reformist agenda of President Yoon Suk-yeol, who vowed to take a harder line on North Korea upon assuming office in May, and likely to illicit a negative response from Beijing.
