Belarus Pres Creates New Southern Command Along Ukraine Border

UKRAINE

Belarusian state media reporting that President Alexander Lukashenko has instructed the creation of a new Southern Operation Command of the nation's armed forces. This will sit alongside the current Western and North-Western Commands.

  • The creation of a Southern Command can be viewed as a signal that Belarus intends to either directly or indirectly continue assisting Russia with its invasion of Ukraine, given that the entirety of Belarus' southern border is in contact with Ukraine.
  • Comes as the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine alleged that Russia had sent Iskander-M mobile short-range ballistic missile systems to Brest in Belarus, just 50km from the Ukrainian border. If these missiles were deployed to Brest, they would be able to strike targets deep into western Ukraine.
