Wires carrying comments from the White House stating that US President Joe Biden and Japanese PM Fumio Kishida discussed the connection between European and Indo-Pacific security as part of bilateral talks at the G7 summit in Germany.

  • There is notable focus on the presence of the leaders of Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand at the NATO leaders' summit taking place in Madrid, Spain over the coming days. This marks the first time that these nations' heads of gov't/state have been invited to a NATO summit, where security focus is usually centred on the European theatre.
  • With NATO leaders set to discuss not only short-term issues regarding the war in Ukraine, but also longer term aims and objectives of the alliance. One is whether it remains an alliance primarily focused on defending European security interests from Russia, or if it develops into a broader global alliance of democratic nations seeking to act as a security bulwark against an illiberal bloc with both China and Russia at the helm.
