Biden's Approval Slumps Following Collapse Of Afghan Gov't

The latest presidential approval ratings show a sharp decline in President Joe Biden's approval rating, combined with a rise in his disapproval ratings in the aftermath of the collapse of the Afghan gov't over the past week.

  • USA, Ipsos for Reuters poll: President Biden (Dem, liberal) job approval: Approve: 46% (-7), Disapprove: 47% (+6).+/- vs. 13-15 August 2021. Fieldwork: 16 August 2021. Sample size: 947
  • The 46% approval is the lowest recorded approval rating for President Biden in an Ipsos/Reuters poll.
  • Biden is facing an increasing international backlash following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. The president's comments on the steadfastness of the Afghan armed forces have come in for particular criticism in Europe. Moreover, senior European politicians have also questioned the effectiveness and role of NATO (previously the only senior politician to call out the role and future of the alliance was French President Emmanuel Macron).
