Biden Speech On Democracy Underway Shortly

US

US President Joe Biden is shortly scheduled to deliver a speech from Normandy, France, to, "honour the legacy of Pointe du Hoc and democracy." Livestream

  • Biden speech, which will be delivered from the same place as former president Ronald Reagan’s famous ‘Pointe du Hoc’ speech, is expected to warn of the dangers to democracy posed by former President Donald Trump.
  • In remarks from Normandy yesterday, to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, Biden said: "Isolationism was not the answer 80 years ago and is not the answer today," an implicit attack on former President Donald Trump’s ambivalent stance on NATO and unclear position on funding Ukraine.
  • Politico warns: “Setting up a direct comparison to the “Great Communicator” and a Normandy speech many consider to be one of the finest ever by an American president overseas is not without risk,” but notes that Biden’s team, “sees a clear political upside in reminding the country — and especially more traditional Republicans skeptical of former President Donald Trump — that he stands for the same democratic values as one of their most revered political icons."
  • Earlier today, Biden met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris for the first time since December 2023. Biden told Zelenskyy: "The United States will stand with you," but the meeting came amid some tension over remaining restriction on Kyiv's use of US-supplied weapons and Biden's decision to skip next week's Ukraine peace conference in Switzerland.
