President Biden is set to declare monkeypox a public health emergency, according to a report published by the Washington Post.

  • The Post suggests that the declaration could come as soon as today in a briefing by Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.
  • The designation will allow the Biden administration to unlock funding to combat the spread of the virus and is expected to precede a second declaration which would expedite treatments and vaccines without stringent federal oversight.
  • The move follows similar declarations from New York, California, and Illinois and follows the World Health Organisation July 23 declaration that monkeypox is a "public health emergency of international concern," the WHO's highest alert level.
