Biden To Deliver Remarks On Artificial Intelligence Executive Order

US

14:30 ET 18:30 GMT: President Biden will deliver remarks on a "landmark" new executive order to regulate security and privacy protections for artificial intelligence. (LIVESTREAM)

  • The White House said in a fact sheet the EO would, “ensure that America leads the way in seizing the promise and managing the risks of artificial intelligence... [and Biden's actions] are vital steps forward in the U.S.’s approach on safe, secure, and trustworthy AI."
  • White House deputy chief of staff Bruce Reed described the order as, "the strongest set of actions any government in the world has ever taken on AI safety, security, and trust… It's the next step in an aggressive strategy to do everything on all fronts to harness the benefits of AI and mitigate the risks.”
  • Bloomberg reports: “The rule, which leverages the US government’s position as a top customer for big tech companies, is designed to vet technology with potential national or economic security risks, along with health and safety. It will likely only apply to future systems, not those already on the market...”
  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said last week that only Congressional action can sufficiently confront the risks of AI, saying of the White House: “They are concerned, and they’re doing a lot regulatorily, but everyone admits the only real answer is legislative.”
