Biden-Xi Call Concludes After 2 Hours 17 Minutes

US-CHINA

A call between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping has concluded with both parties remaining tightlipped about the content of the call.

  • The lack of information from Beijing is at odds with playbook in previous Biden-Xi calls when Chinese state media outlets have provided real-time readouts of the call.
  • Alivia Siong at CNA: "First mention of phone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Joe Biden in Chinese state media. Brief statement says the two heads of state had in-depth communications and exchanges on Sino-US relations and issues of mutual concern."
  • The White House is similarly vague: "President Biden concluded his conversation with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) at 10:50 am ET."
  • Bloomberg: "Expectation is building that President Joe Biden may scrap some of the tariffs imposed on roughly $350 billion in Chinese imports following a highly-anticipated conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday."
  • Morning Consult provides data pointing at a thawing of public opinion in China towards the US: "As President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping speak for the first time since March, our latest data shows that 66% of Chinese adults view the United States as an enemy, a new tracking low, seesawing relative to last month’s high of 79%."
