BIS Data Shows EM Dollar Debt Topping $4 Trillion

BIS' global liquidity indicators release shows USD debt among emerging markets has grown 7% Y/Y and has now passed $4 trillion to hit a new alltime high.


  • Rise in $ debt led by Africa & Middle East (+14%), then Asia-Pacific (+9%), Latin America (+5%).
  • Countering the trend, emerging Europe saw a 5% fall in $ debt. BIS pin this on EUR debt becoming more popular in the region, extending the multi-year trend.
