Bitcoin Keeps Trading Like A Tech Stock

  • Since the start of the year, the surge in stagflation risks, the hawkish Fed tone and the elevated geopolitical uncertainty have left risky assets vulnerable, particularly long-duration equities such as tech.
  • Interestingly, the rise in risk aversion has also been impacting Bitcoin (and cryptocurrencies in general), whose correlation with risky assets has been rising since the Covid19 shock.
  • The chart below shows the strong co-movement between Bitcoin prices and tech stocks (Nasdaq composite) since the start of the year.
  • With more and more institutions starting to adopt bitcoin (and cryptos) as part of their business, investors have started to question if the cryptocurrency will keep its diversification characteristics in the medium to long term (bitcoin correlation to risky assets was close to zero prior Covid).
