Blinken Presser Delayed w/Netanyahu Set To Address Hamas Ceasefire Offer

ISRAEL

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's presser has beenpushed back to 2030 local time (1330ET, 1830GMT) due to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivering comments at 1930 local time (1230ET, 1730GMT). Expectations are for Netanyahu to address the counteroffer from Hamas on a potential multi-stage ceasefire in Gaza. Blinken has been in Israel today meeting with Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant among others in an effort to push for a 'humanitarian pause'.

  • Earlier, Alex Marquardt at CNN posted on X: ""There is no way Israel will agree to a ceasefire and withdrawing the [Israeli] forces” from Gaza, an Israeli official told CNN. Among other factors, “Hamas are asking for release of prisoners captured on October 7. This is something Israel will never agree to.""
  • There is speculationthat a new round of talks could start in Cairo on 8 Feb, with the US, Egypt and Qatar acting as mediators once again. Amachei Stein at Kann posts on X: "Defense Minister Gallant to the US Secretary of State in Blinken: "Hamas' answer was formulated so that Israel would refuse it. Their position will lead to the continuation of the war, and our forces will reach other places in Gaza, soon.'"
