US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is shortly due to provide testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on "American diplomacy and global leadership," and President Joe Biden's FY2025 budget request for the State Department. LIVESTREAM
- Blinken will provide a second testimony today to the Senate Committee on Appropriations at 14:30 ET 19:30 BST and appear twice before House panels later in the week.
- The committee hearings are expected to focus on Israel policy, especially in light of yesterday's news that an ICC prosecutor is pursuing arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.
- Republicans on the panel are likely to squeeze Blinken on a Biden administration decision to withhold some heavy ordinance transfers to Israel due over concerns over the use of US bombs in a potential invasion of Rafah. The policy shift has prompted accusations from the GOP that the White House has abandoned Israel. Republicans are also expected to grill Blinken on the Biden administration's failure to negotiate a hostage exchange deal.
- Israel has become a major political headache for the Biden administration with policy struggling to strike a delicate balance between supporting Israel without alienating large swathes of the Democratic base which sympathise with Palestinian civilians.
