Brussels Set To Impose New Sanctions After Putin Mobilisation Speech

EU-RUSSIA

A number of EU figures have stated that the bloc is set to impose a new round of sanctions on Russia in response to President Vladimir Putin's 21 September speech that saw a 'partial mobilisation' of reserve troops announced, as well as threats to use nuclear weapons.

  • Speaking to CNN, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that "Putin is showing his weakness now, because what you see is that he plans to mobilize personnel that is less trained, less experienced, less motivated. And he wants to start a referendum on Ukrainian sovereign soil. I think this calls for sanctions from our side again."
  • Observers have speculated that Commission officials had been working on a seventh package of sanctions for some time, but that yesterday's speech has given this work new impetus.
  • There has been little in the way of detail on what these sanctions could be, but aligning with a G7-proposed cap on Russian oil prices, sanctioning more Kremlin-linked individuals, and restricting the flow of more luxury goods to Russia could be on the cards according to Politico.
