Business Sec: Reserve Tanker Fleet On Road Today, Petrol Situation Improving

UK

Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Kwasi Kwarteng tweets: "I can confirm the government's Reserve Tanker Fleet will be on the road this afternoon to boost deliveries of fuel to forecourts across Britain. The trucks are driven by civilians and will provide additional logistical capacity to the fuel industry. We are now seeing signs that the situation at the pumps has begun to improve with more stations getting more fuel.

The sooner we can all return to our normal buying habits, the sooner the situation will return to normal."

  • Last few days have represented first major fuel shortage in UK since 2012. Opinion polling carried out during the crisis showed respondents primarily blaming the media for the shortages at the pumps, rather than the public itself or the gov't (see chart below).
  • As such, while incidents such as petrol stations running dry can often do significant damage to gov't credibility, with a large proportion of the public blaming the media for hyping up the situation, or other members of the public for panic-buying, PM Boris Johnson's administration could emerge from the situation fairly unscathed.
