Canada's Trudeau Calls China Autocracy, Says Coordination Needed

CHINA
  • “For too long, China and other autocracies have been able to play off neighbors and friends against each other by offering bits of access to their market for this product from this country but not from the others. And the time is now where we actually look to coordinate,” Trudeau said at a press conference Friday in Ottawa with South Korea’s president
  • “China is certainly a real challenging actor in the region. There are areas in which we are going to have to figure out how to work together, like on climate change," Trudeau said. “There are areas in which we are going to be directly competitive, in many economic and trade issues”
  • “But there are areas in which we are going to need to continue challenge China. Human rights, on respect for the international rules-based order, and doing that with a nuanced approach that is looking out for the interests of Canadians, the interests of citizens across our democracies, is essential.”
