Cape Town to Seek 700 MW of Power as Eskom Imposes Outages

  • The city will announce plans to secure more than 200 megawatts of electricity supply from independent producers within two weeks
  • Cape Town, which needs 1,800 megawatts at its winter demand peak, will still rely on state-owned Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. for most of its supply - but is seeking to diversify
  • After the initial tender Cape Town will follow up with a tender for the construction of 100 megawatts to 200 megawatts of generation capacity that will be owned by the city itself
  • Cape Town Mayor said “The economic effects of a reliable power supply in Cape Town will mean more profitable businesses and more job opportunities.”
