Catalan Socialists To Consult On Any Deal w/Pro-Independence Parties

SPAIN

Catalan News reporting that the Catalan branch of PM Pedro Sanchez's centre-left Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC), will consult with its members on any potential deal reached with pro-independence parties in Catalonia or the Basque Country that could see Sanchez win an investiture vote.

  • Catalan News: "Catalan pro-independence parties have previously said an amnesty law for figures involved in the push to separate from Spain would be a prerequisite to negotiations, while others have cited a self-determination referendum as the price to give their support for Sánchez's bid."
  • The consultation highlights that it is not just the go-ahead from the pro-independence Together for Catalonia (Junts) and other regionalist parties that is required but the support of those within Sanchez's own party.
  • The PSOE is strong opposed to Catalonia or other autonomous communities of Spain becoming independent. For some within the party, offering amnesty to those involved in 2017's illegal independence referendum or the granting of a path to a legal referendum could prove too greater concessions, risking a backlash against Sanchez.
  • Sanchez has until 27 November to win an investiture vote in parliament or snap elections will be called for early 2024.
