Central Bank Sees Significant Staff Changes

TURKEY
  • Turkey's central bank is going through an "historic upheaval" after President Erdoğan sacked and replaced its governor in March, columnist Erdal Sağlam said.
  • A series of dismissals or demotions, which started with the exit of several deputy governors and heads of department, has gathered pace and now totals about 90 people, Sağlam said in a column for Deutsche Welle on Monday.
  • "There has been a complete upheaval in the central bank's staff," he said, adding that the reshuffle in management has stretched down to branch manager level.
  • New governor Şahap Kavcıoğlu has made the changes in consultation with the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP). Several inexperienced people from the AKP were then hired, said Sağlam, who is a former columnist on the economy for Hürriyet, one of Turkey's best-selling newspapers. (AHVAL)
