Central Election Commission to Rule on Boris Nadezhdin’s Presidential Candidacy

  • Note that the Central Election Commission is currently holding a meeting on the registration of Boris Nadezhdin as presidential candidate. Nadezhdin hopes to run as a candidate from the Civic Initiative party though the Kremlin has said it does not view him as a rival to President Putin, who is widely expected to win his fifth overall term in office.
  • Russian lawmakers have decided to hold off on introducing fines on major exporters for violations of requirements to sell forex earnings following lobbying by big business association RSPP, Vedomosti report. The bill proposed fines equivalent to 75% to 100% of the amount of unsold forex revenue.
  • Russian gas producer Novatek will not be able to start shipping LNG from its Arctic LNG 2 plant before March, Kommersant report. The newspaper add that US sanctions have slowed the project, as buyers are currently refusing to accept its LNG.
  • Russian platinum exports to China surged 180% in 2023, while palladium exports jumped 70%, Chinese customs data showed. As a result, Russia's share of China's platinum and palladium imports grew to 25% and 64%, respectively, from 10% and 34% in 2022.
