Centrica Takes Steps to Open Rough Storage UK

NATURAL GAS

Centrica announced earlier today it has been awarded its first stage of a gas storage license for its closed Rough site.

  • The UK is trying to utilize all storage options ahead of this winter to protect against disruptions in a tight global gas market.
  • “The award of a licence allows COUK (Centrica offshore UK Ltd) to progress with seeking the further regulatory approvals required before gas storage operations can commence, including further approvals required from the NSTA,” the authority said on its website.
  • Even with Rough storage utilisation, the UK is left with limited gas cover in the event of supply shocks, but it is better protected than mainland Europe because of long-term Norwegian gas deals and access to LNG imports.
