Chair Powell Questioned On Central Bank Digital Currency

FED
  • Q: On central bank digital currency
    • A: We haven't come to a conclusion that we should propose that Congress should consider legislation to authorize a digital dollar. What every major central bank is doing is trying to stay in the frontiers of digital finance. I haven't made in my mind a decision that this is something the US should be doing. It's something we need to understand.
  • Bloomberg going with this headline (*POWELL: EVERY FOMC MEETING REALLY IS LIVE NOW) which is out of context, here's what Powell said:
  • Q: April 27th is the 13th anniversary since the Fed started holding regular news conferences, can you and your colleagues do more on the transparency front?
    • A: There's been a march toward greater transparency over 30 years, going from 4 press conferences a year to 8 - every meeting really is live now, I think that's a good innovation.
