China FM-Pelosi Visit Has Seriously Impacted Foundation Of Relations

US-CHINA

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a press statement as US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sets foot on Taiwanese soil.

  • "Pelosi's visit to Taiwan in disregard of China's strong opposition and solemn representations [official complaint via diplomatic channels] has seriously impacted the foundation of China-US relations".
  • The visit has "seriously violated China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, seriously undermined the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait, and sent a serious wrong signal on 'Taiwan independence'.
  • Pelosi's visit 'in any form and for any reason is a major political provocation to escalate official exchanges between the United States and Taiwan'.
  • "This is a very dangerous act of playing with fire. Whoever plays with fire burns oneself."
  • FM: "Taiwan is the most important, most core, most sensitive issue in US-Sino relations".
  • In response to [the visit] China will take all necessary measures to resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity...All consequences are to be borne by the US side and Taiwan pro-independence forces".
  • "We urge the US to stop interfering with China's internal affairs, and not to continue in the wrong and dangerous path."
Chinese media reporting military will hold drills near Taiwan 4-7 Aug.
