CHINA: China is against any action that would damage the functioning of the
World Trade Organization, Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Gao Feng said at a
regular press briefing Thursday. According to the ministry's website, Gao was
responding to the criticism by the U.S. and Europe Union of WTO and U.S. Trade
Representative Robert Lighthizer's argument that the WTO is losing its focus on
trade negotiation and wealthier members such as China had been offered unfair
exemptions. The WTO is not perfect, but China would continue to defend the
multilateral trading system with WTO at its core and facilitate multilateral
trade negotiations, Gao said.
