(MNI) London-Wires carrying comments from the Chinese Foreign Ministry writing on a meeting between Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Japan's Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Yoshifumi Tsuge in Beijing. Ministry says Sun expressed China's 'grave concerns' over Japan's 'negative actions' regarding China during the meeting of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (the 'Quad'), in the US over the weekend. Sun urges Japan to be 'cautious' in its remarks and actions on issues related to maritime affairs. The minister urged Japan to refrain from 'meddling in' the South China Sea. Says that he hopes that Japan will work with China to build positive momentum for improving and developing bilateral relations.
- At the Quad meeting, the four participating nations (US, Japan, India and Australia) agreed on a number of actions related to maritime security in the Indo-Pacific including joint coast guard operations.
- The visit comes amid a tense period in Sino-Japanese relations. The killing of a 10-year old Japanese boy at a Japanese school in Shenzhen, China last week has led to calls from Tokyo for the Chinese gov't to take steps to ensure the safety of its expats and crack down on "unfounded, malicious, anti-Japanese posts" on social media.
- The foreign ministers of both countries are set to hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in NYC later this week.
