China UN Envoy Says Beijing Ready To Play Role In Resolving War

Reuters carrying comments from China's Deputy UN Ambassador, Zhang Jun, at a special session of the United Nations General Assembly called to consider a new draft resolution aimed at restoring peace in Ukraine.

  • Zhang: "China is ready to continue playing a constructive role in resolving the Ukraine crisis."
  • Zhang: "One year into Ukraine war brutal facts offer an ample proof that sending weapons will not being peace."
  • Zhang also called on the General Assembly to join against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons.
  • Zhang's comments come as western officials become increasingly concerned that China may be preparing to deliver military aid to Russia for the first time.
  • Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh told reporters yesterday: “We haven’t seen them give lethal aid to Russia at this time for the war, but they also haven’t taken that off the table.”
  • Singh said, "there will certainly be consequences for China should they deepen their relationship with Russia," but declined to comment on potentials measures the US may take.
