China Will 'Retaliate Vehemently' If US Takes Action Against HK-Wires

Wires and social media reporting unattributed comments from the Chinese gov't stating that it would 'retaliate vehemently' if the United States takes action against Hong Kong.

  • Rhetoric likely spurred by Reuters article posted earlier today that says that according to two sources the US is planning to impose sanctions on Chinese officials over measures implemented by Beijing that Washington, D.C. says is a threat to Hong Kong's democracy.
  • US also set to warn international firms operating in Hong Kong about the deteriorating business environment in Hong Kong due to the National Security law implemented by Beijing last year.
  • In a presser following talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, US President Joe Biden stated yesterday that "The situation in Hong Kong is deteriorating. And the Chinese government is not keeping its commitment that it made on how it would deal with Hong Kong, and so it is more of an advisory as to what may happen in Hong Kong. It's as simple as that and as a complicated as that."
