Chinese FM: China & Russia Support Each Other On Core Interests

Wires carrying comments from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stating that 'China and Russia support each other on core interests'.

  • The positive language from Beijing comes a day after a call between Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin. Following the call, the Kremlin stated that Xi "noted the legitimacy" of the actions taken by Russia "in the face of challenges to its security created by external forces". Also stated that Sino-Russian relations are at an "unprecedentedly high level" and that there will be greater cooperation on energy, finance and industry.
  • Wang's comments seem to confirm China's stance with regards to Russia and its actions in Ukraine. Without offering explicit support this is the closest China has come to offering outright support for Russia in its war against Ukraine, a development that will cause significant concern in Washington, D.C, and European capitals.
