Chinese FM: High-Level China-Japan Dialogue Next Year

CHINA-JAPAN

Social media reporting comments from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi following his meeting with his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi earlier today.

  • Supposedly the two agreed to hold a high-level dialogue between the two countries next year. No indication of whether this will include President Xi and Prime Minister Suga.
  • Yi says the two will work together 'for new bilateral ties fit for a new era', and that they will continue to communicate over issues in the East China Sea.
  • Motegi states that travel between the two nations will resume later in November, under two separate "business track" and "residence track" frameworks. Also said the two exchanged expertise on combating COVID-19, as well as agreeing a mechanism for cooperation on farm trade.
  • Both sides may be looking for an improvement in relations under new Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga, who is viewed as something of a less overtly nationalist leader than his predecessor Shinzo Abe.
