Chinese FM To Visit Indonesia, PNG As US Warns Of Security Cooperation

ASIA

(MNI) London - Chinese Foreign Minsiter Wang Yi will visit Indonesia, Cambodia, and Papua New Guinea from 18-23 April the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed. The visit comes amid continued competition for influence in the Indo-Pacific region between the US and its allies, and China. Cambodia is a long-standing Chinese ally in the southeast Asian region. However for Beijing, Indonesia and PNG are two countries where the Chinese gov't is attempting to deepen links and limit any prospect of a turn towards the US in terms of economic or security interests.

  • As Bloomberg noted in March, China remains the largest single investor in Indonesia (USD7bn in 2023), making it a crucial partner. However, the Indonesian gov't signed up to a 'comprehensive strategic partnership' with the US in late 2023 that will continue to build up the US-Indonesian security partnership. Under President-Elect Prabowo Subianto, outoing President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's policy of maintining cordial links with both countries is likely to remain the key aim.
  • While PNG is a more marginal regional actor in comparison to its resource-rich, highly-populated neighbour Indonesia, the country has similarly been the site of geoopolitical competition between the US and China. In Feb, the US sought to dissuade the PNG gov't from signing a security pact with China. PNG has a multi-decade security partnership with the US and Australia. Wang's visit to Port Moresby could be seen as an attempt by China to bring PNG into its security sphere, rather than being purely an 'economic partner'.
