Chinese FM Warns US, Japan On Disputed Islands

ASIA

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has issued comments regarding the disputed
Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, reaffirming Beijing's claim.

  • The FM claimed the Diaoyu Islands (as they are known in China) are Chinese
territory and therefore law enforcement in the area is China's right.
  • This follows comments made earlier today by US Forces in Japan (USFJ)
Commander Kevin Schneider in a virtual conference.
  • Schneider, when asked about the defence of Japan said there had been
an "unprecedented" number of "incursions" around the islands by Chinese
forces in the last 100 days, and that the US can help Japan with surveillance
around the islands, especially given the potential for the arrival of a large
Chinese fishing fleet around the islands around August 15.
  • The islands have long been a source of tension in the region. With Sino-US
relations hitting multi-year lows, any signs of an increase in activity in the
East/South China Seas could prove more risky than the usual
    military posturing.
